Course Information
Description A chronological analysis of the historical and cultural contexts of the visual arts from the 14th century to the present day. Primarily an examination of Western painting, sculpture, architecture and related visual arts from the early Renaissance to the present. May be taken in either year of this curriculum.
Prerequisites None
Learning Outcomes Identify and describe works of art based on their chronology and style, using standard categories and terminology. (PSLO Alpha, 1,2,3) Measured by pretest/post-test, embedded test or quiz questions.
Investigate major artistic developments and significant works of art from the 14th century to the 21st century. (PSLO Alpha, 1, 2, 5, 6) Measured by pretest/post-test, group discussions, and/or oral & visual presentations.
Analyze the relationship of art to history by placing works of art within cultural, historical, and chronological contexts. (PSLO 1, 2, 5, 6) Measured by group discussions, and oral & visual presentations.
Critically interpret and evaluate works of art. (PSLO Alpha, 1, 5, 6) Measured by group discussions and compare/contrast essay.
Core Objectives     Communication skills: Students will demonstrate effective written, oral and visual communication.

Critical Thinking Skills: Students will engage in creative and/or innovative thinking, and/or inquiry, analysis, evaluation, synthesis of information, organizing concepts and constructing solutions.

Teamwork: Students will demonstrate the ability to work effectively with others to support a shared purpose or goal and consider different points of view.

Social Responsibility: Students will demonstrate intercultural competency and civic knowledge by engaging effectively in local, regional, national and/or global communities.

Instructor Policies
Attendance Policy During the week, students will complete readings, reading quizzes, blog posts/art assignments and/or assignments pertaining to the midterm or final written exam. Completing and submitting these assignments before 11:59 PM on Fridays will be accounted for in a Weekly Participation grade.
Academic Honesty Academic honesty is expected from all students, and dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated. Please consult the LSC-PA policies (Section IX, subsection A, in the Faculty Handbook) for consequences of academic dishonesty.
